Title
Das Institut für Sexualwissenschaft
Subject
Sexology research institute
Description
Das Institut für Sexualwissenschaft was the world's first queer gender and sexuality research institute. It was founded by sexologist, physician, and queer advocate Magnus Hirschfeld in 1919, and operated until it was ransacked by the Nazi affiliated German Student Union on May 6, 1933. This was the site of the first Nazi book burning, where the majority of the institute’s research was destroyed. The demographic base encompassed any variety of queer and queer allied clients seeking resources for education, sexual health and wellness, queer activism, and some forms of medical care. The institute’s services included sex education, counseling, and some of the earliest forms of trans healthcare and gender affirming surgery for trans women in particular.
