Hohenzoffern Hall / H-Lounge / Hohenzoffern-Café

Title

Hohenzoffern Hall / H-Lounge / Hohenzoffern-Café

Subject

Lesbian cafe, club, lounge

Description

The oldest lesbian café in the city. At one point it featured an all-male cabaret, for lesbians only. Its atmosphere was "easygoing [and] somewhat faded", with blacked-out picture windows (to hide the interior from prying eyes) and large restaurant-style booths with padded chairs; its clientele mainly consisted of "married" lesbian couples, many of them older women, conversing over coffee while a gay duo performed pop music on violin and piano or accordion. Occasionally social dances or box-steps would be danced. Men were tolerated in the establishment and sometimes danced with the femmes/Mädis, always requesting permission first from the Mädis' "Daddies"/Bubis/butches. (Gordon 2006, 280)
