Subject
Lesbian Bar
Description
A lesbian club within the Mali und Igel bar. It was opened by Elsa Conrad sometime in 1927, and closed in 1933 when Nazi Germany started a campaign to close all homosexual bars and clubs. The club (Mali und Igel) and the bar were both managed by Elsa Conrad (also known as Igel) and her friend Amalie Rothaug (known as Mali). It was a lesbian club that was highly exclusive; it was only possible to get in with an introduction. Monbijou des Westen had a membership of around 600 people at its peak. It catered to the rich, intellectual elite of Berlin lesbians. One notable guest of this club is the actress Marlene Dietrich.
