In league with this, the waiters were aging men and women often dressed in similar uniform, or as ship captains. The second factor that rendered Karls-Lounge so unique was its menu: despite being lumped in with gay bars, Karls-Lounge did not serve alcohol, given the amount of underage clientele it brought in. <text>Described by Happy In Berlin?, a repository for English writer's experiences of 1920s Berlin, as a "shabby gay bar in the working class district of Kreuzberg", the Cosy Corner was a frequent meeting place for downtrodden revolutionaries. However, it was also frequented by more privileged individuals, looking for cheap escapism by way of the underpaid male prostitutes working there. These figures included writers W. H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood - the latter of whom would go on to fictionalize the Cosy Corner as the 'Alexander Casino' in his magnum opus, Goodbye to Berlin. Isherwood would later retract his endorsement of this particular brand of hedonism, referring to his frequent use of the Cosy Corner's prostitutes - and his benefiting from impoverished Berlin queers as a whole - as a 'colonial situation'.</text>

Branding itself a "queer ambient bar", Kwia draws from Japanese "Jazz Kissa" cafes, in which jazz is played at a listening volume, meant to be appreciated rather than used as background noise. While Kwia's focus is not solely on jazz, it remains deeply on music - between its far more mellow vibes than other clubs and this musical focus, Kwia boasts a surprisingly wide range of clientele. Music fans stay in the front room, where talking is mostly prohibited, whilst those there for the atmosphere can venture into the back room, where drinks and food are served and talking is fair game.</text>

<text>The Monocle-Bar was one of three prominent transgender-inclusive bars in Weimar era Berlin, alongside its peers Silhouette and Mikado Bar. Remembered of those three as being popular with actors, the Monocle, along with its peers, rose to popularity later into its years of operation as the much more popular trans-inclusive Eldorado grew a reputation for pandering to heterosexual thrill-seekers. The Monocle especially was liked by those who felt the scene was becoming too crowded due to its "militantly gynocentric" attitude: as recounted in Mel Gordon's Voluptuous Panic, "A hefty female transvestite at the door [...] holding a riding crop in one transgendered hand [...] made certain males did not enter." However, like many other popular clubs at the time, Nazis were known to have made their way inside - most notably Wolf-Heinrich Graf von Helldorff, who was ousted from his position as a head SA officer after it was found he frequented the Monocle. Members of its cabaret act recall him, drunk, heckling them with requests to play the Horst-Wessel-Lied.</text>
