<text>Mikado was a famous club where costume balls were held for trans (and cross dressing) women. Outside the club was also a known location for sex workers to wait and meet up with people. Under this source there are two still pictures and one audio file.
The first picture is an image of the Mikado Bar [black and white, chairs, tables, pictures on the wall].
The second picture is an image of “The Baroness” who sung while crossdressed in this institution [black and white picture of a person who is crossdressed as a woman in regal costume, much like Marie Antoinette].
The audio file is a recording of the song sung by the Baroness, sung here by Lotte Lehmann in 1926.</text>

It was founded by sexologist, physician, and queer advocate Magnus Hirschfeld in 1919, and operated until it was ransacked by the Nazi affiliated German Student Union on May 6, 1933. This was the site of the first Nazi book burning, where the majority of the institute’s research was destroyed. The demographic base encompassed any variety of queer and queer allied clients seeking resources for education, sexual health and wellness, queer activism, and some forms of medical care. The institute’s services included sex education, counseling, and some of the earliest forms of trans healthcare and gender affirming surgery for trans women in particular.</text>

The club (Mali und Igel) and the bar were both managed by Elsa Conrad (also known as Igel) and her friend Amalie Rothaug (known as Mali). It was a lesbian club that was highly exclusive; it was only possible to get in with an introduction. Monbijou des Westen had a membership of around 600 people at its peak. It catered to the rich, intellectual elite of Berlin lesbians. One notable guest of this club is the actress Marlene Dietrich.</text>
